Healthy Families NZ is a large-scale initiative that brings together community leadership in a united effort for better health

It is about thinking bigger, activating leadership at all levels, and driving innovation to create health promoting environments in the places we spend our time; from our schools and workplaces, to sports clubs, marae and other key community settings.

With a focus on 10 locations across the country, Healthy Families NZ has the potential to impact the lives of over a million New Zealanders.

On this website you will find ideas on how you can create healthy change in your community, along with information and contact details for Healthy Families NZ locations across the country.

Everything we do…
What I do
What you do
What we do
Tātou tātou e.

It’s time
It’s time
It’s time
Kua tae te wā
It’s time, to make an impact on
my health
my health
tōku hauora
our health

Healthy Families NZ is about all of us working together
to make our communities
healthier places to be.

From the Far North,
to the Waitakeres

to Manurewa-Papakura

to East Cape

to Lower Hutt

all the way down to Invercargill

Healthy Families NZ is about
our children
our parents
our uncles
our mokopuna
our grandparents
our friends
our whānau

It’s about all of us leading healthy change
in the places we live,
and play

In our schools,
and early childhood education,
our workplaces
and sports clubs
on the marae,
and in our places of worship
from the council chambers,
right through to the Beehive

We all have a role to play in laying the foundations
for a healthier future

Preventable diseases, like type 2 diabetes
are threatening our quality of life
But it doesn’t have to be this way

Every healthy meal we share
Every time we get active together
Every piece of advice we give,
and the kōrero we have,

Every positive step we take
To impact the health of our community and future generations

Healthy Families NZ
Let’s build healthier communities
What you do matters.

Creating Change

The places where we spend our time are the foundation for a healthier future. In healthier environments, children learn better, workplaces are more productive, New Zealanders are healthier and happier – communities are more liveable.

We can all be a part of building a healthier community where we live, learn, work and play.

Healthy Families NZ Interim Evaluation Report

Released in September 2017, the Healthy Families NZ Interim Evaluation report describes the establishment and implementation nationwide from 2014 to March 2016.

The report shows that Healthy Families NZ has been established with integrity to its intention and purpose and is a promising approach to prevention of chronic disease. It also identifies eight emerging themes and lessons, including that an integral part of Healthy Families NZ is enabling and supporting Māori leadership.
